IRONWOOD - Hancock finally got the breaks it needed to win a close game Friday, as the Bulldogs got the stop on an overtime two-point conversion to beat Ironwood 28-26 in WestPAC play.

"I thought I was going to have a heart attack," Hancock coach Matt Walter said to the Daily Globe of Ironwood. "Every time I come here it's tough and a very close game. We've lost two games on two-point conversions, so it was good to finally win one the same way. But I think losing on those two-point conversions taught us to keep fighting no matter what and we did that today.

"Ironwood sure didn't play like an 0-7 team. They were as physical or more physical than the teams we've played. They should get all the credit in the world."

Hancock led 20-12 with 1:48 to go when Ironwood's Taylor Killam outjumped a Hancock defender for a

tipped ball, leading to a 48-yard scoring play. Quarterback Adam Mackey hit Jared Sobolewski for the game-tying two-point conversion.

Hancock's Tanner Kearly just made it by inches on a fourth-and-goal QB sneak to start the overtime.

Mackey completed a desperation pass on fourth-and-10 to Sobolewski, tying the game, but could not complete the conversion pass.

Hancock overcame giving up an 82-yard touchdown on the opening kick-off from Denver Sharrow, tying it on a 6-yard pass from Kearly to Carl Kangas late in the first half.

Ironwood took another lead late in the third, but two scores in 62 seconds turned the tide for the visitors. Kearly hit Kangas for a 12-yard TD pass to tie it, then completed the conversion to Chase Anderson for a 14-12 lead.

Hancock recovered an onside kick, then scored on a 40-yard touchdown run by Brandon Barnes to give the Bulldogs a 20-12 lead with 4:22 to play.

Barnes ran for 193 yards on 30 carries to lead Hancock, while Kearly threw for 146 on 10-of-27 attempts.

Hancock (3-4, 2-2 WestPAC) plays at West Iron County next week, while Ironwood (0-7, 0-5) is at Calumet.
