HANCOCK - Filmore J. Halonen, 88, of Hancock, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born in Rudyard, Mich. on December 30, 1924, to the late Eino and Saima Halonen. He graduated in 1942 from Rudyard High School and soon after joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his return from the war, he pursued his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Detroit Mercy, graduating in 1950.
He began his working career at the firm of John D. Morrison (later becoming Ernst & Ernst) working as a Certified Public Accountant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ironwood and then Hancock. In 1965 he joined D & N Bank in Hancock as controller, retiring in 1990 as their president and chief operating officer.
He married Karen "Connie" (Eilola) Juntunen of Hancock on October 20, 1962.
Fil was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hancock where he served as chairman of its Administrative Board. He was an active member and leader of many local boards and organizations over the years, including chairman of the Portage Hospital Board and also served on the boards of Northern Mutual Insurance and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Fil helped to establish the Oak House in Hancock and the Houghton County Arena. He was an avid Michigan Tech sports fan.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Halonen and a brother, Raymond.
He is survived by his wife, Karen "Connie" Halonen of Hancock; a daughter, Susan (Gordon) Grigg of Ishpeming; a son, Eric (Barbara) Halonen of Hancock; grandchildren, Kelsey, Kimberly, Gordon III, Travis and Dustin; a great-grandson, Ashton; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Amy Terhune to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Friends may call on Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock.
