Kids fishing derby successful

August 2, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

32 club members and volunteers were on hand on Saturday July 20, 2013 at the Swedetown Pond in Calumet to insure a great day of fishing for 162 kids registered for the derby. They registered kids, helped them with their rods, put on worms, untangled lines, measured fish and served a hot dog, cookies, watermelon and ice cream lunch.

Several of the kids caught some of the hybrid bluegills and perch planted with the support of Calumet Township and Paul Lehto.

Pat's Market and Louie's Fresh Foods supported the lunch.

Burger King provided the juice and gift certificates. Toni's Country Kitchen baked some delicious cookies and a really big cookie for a prize. Worms were provided by the Portage Health systems and brought there by tournament fishermen Mark Butke and Dan Dube. They also brought rods for the raffle from their sponsors--Quality Hardware Lake Linden, Vollwerth's, Our Lady of Mercy Nursing Home, Bay Electric, Farm Bureau Insurance and RC Mechanical. Copper Country Elks Lodge #404 made a generous donation to help fund the derby.

UP Whitetails of the Keweenaw and Carol Bessolo(in memory of her son Charlie) and Nancy Sherk also made cash donations. Dave Crouch from Quality Hardware in Calumet brought rods and presented them to 7 youths. Thanks to Paul Malnar for the bicycle donation, Swede's in Copper Harbor for several prizes, Calumet Mercantile for the candy, Ward's for the back pack, Frank Kastelic for rods and fishing supplies, John and Joann Dudenas for paper products, Tim Nakkula, John Jilbert, Doug Moyle for coloring books and fishing supplies, Monkey Business for the shirts, Wal-mart for hooks ,bobbers, sinkers and A-1 Toy-Lets, LLC provided a valuable service for all present.

Thanks also to Harter Enterprises and the Daily Mining Gazette for their support.

The club appreciates Dave Sladek from the Elks being present and offering literature on Drug Awareness for the kids.

And thanks to those who made donations at the derby and accompanied their kids.

Parents, Grandparents and siblings deserve a special thank you for getting out with these young kids fishing and helping them enjoy our great outdoors. Kids took home 36 new rods, tackle boxes, coolers, T shirts, hoodies and other prizes along with the "goodie bag" presented to all participants.

Good to see Jim Junttila on the road to recovery and out taking pictures again.
