The Daily Mining Gazette

ALLOUEZ - Janet R. Manniko, 79, of Allouez, died July 17, 2013, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium after battling diabetes for 70 years.

She was born on October 19, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Willard and Ione (DeMarois) Johnson. Janet attended grade school in Chicago, where in 1946 she won first place for her artwork in a city-wide competition for children her age, sponsored by the Chicago Board of Education. This was the first of many awards she won over a lifetime dedicated to artistic achievement.

Janet attended high school in Miami, Fla., and then took numerous art classes at the University of Miami and the Art Institute in Chicago where she further developed what turned into a passionate attachment to the visual arts.

In 1988, at the age of 55, Janet finally completed her formal education by earning a BA degree in communication from Michigan Technological University in Houghton.

She married Thomas A. Manniko in Calumet, on June 10, 1961. For the next 52 years, Janet and Tom were not only husband and wife, but partners working together as artist and craftsman. Janet, producing her watercolors, oils, acrylics, water based tints and India ink drawings while Tom complimented her efforts with his woodworking skills. As anyone who stops by their "Last Place On Earth" in Allouez can attest, the artist and the craftsman both supported and enhanced one another in a way that was as unique as it was beneficial to both.

Janet was a mild-mannered person with a trusting belief in all things and persons she encountered during her life.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Manniko; her brothers, Willard Johnson, Donald Johnson and Philip Johnson; sister, Mary (Johnson) Alexander; and many other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday July 22, 2013 in the Erickson-Crowley Peterson Funeral Home with Fr. Abraham Mupparathara to officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.

Online condolences may be left for the family at ericksoncrowleypeterson.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Janet's memory to the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation.
