The Daily Mining Gazette

PHOENIX - Margaret Eleanor (Petaja) Prall, age, 95, died peacefully on June 7, 2013 in Phoenix, Ariz., where she had resided since September 2012 to be near her nephew, William (Bill) Prall.

She was born on February 10, 1918, in Laurium, the daughter of Anna and Gust Petaja.

Eleanor graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1936. She then moved to Detroit and pursued a career as a professional figure skater performing with a number of skating troupes, including Royal Ice Palace Revue and Ice Follies throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and Cuba. She appeared in several shows with Dick Button and Sonja Henie.

"Margie Lee," as Eleanor was known in the skating world, actually skated as a stand-in for Henie when she was unable to perform. After her retirement from professional skating, Eleanor resided in Detroit for several years.

She married Francis Prall on February 15, 1964, in Detroit and moved to Medaryville, Ind., where she lived until moving to Phoenix.

Eleanor was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet. She and her sister, Dorothy, were talented vocalists who performed for many years with a choral club affiliated with Purdue University in Indiana.

She was a devoted aunt to 16 nieces and nephews and helped nurture all of them, especially while the family gathered at their cottage in Bootjack, affectionately known as "Dreamland." She had a marvelous sense of humor and could improvise "props" and costumes to entertain family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers and five sisters; two nephews; and her husband Francis.

She is survived by eight nephews and six nieces; as well as her circle of friends and caregivers in Medaryville, Ind.

Eleanor will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her. We celebrate her life and cherish those wonderful memories!

The funeral service for Eleanor was held Thursday, June 20, 2013, in the Lynch Funeral Home in Clawson, Mich.

Internment was in the family plot in White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Mich.
