HOUGHTON - Sayen's Auto continued its roll through the local Junior (age 13-14) baseball tournament with a 13-2 wipeout of top-seeded Baraga in the championship game.
Alan Jurmu threw a complete-game two-hitter for his third-seeded team in the title game at Wolverine Field in Kearsarge. He struck out nine and walked three.
Sayen's hung four runs on the board in the first inning on a Jurmu RBI single, RBI groundouts from Jaden Janke and Brody Budweg and a wild pitch. Jurmu had another RBI single as part of a two-run second before Baraga got on the board when Ray Dix walked and scored on a botched pick-off attempt.
Sayen's added four more in the third to continue the rout and three to finish it off in the top of the seventh.
Jurmu and Nordstrom had two hits apiece for the champs.
J. Peltier Construction won a pitcher's duel in the Minor (age 9-10) division semifinals in the Portage Lake Little League Tournament Thursday by a 2-1 score over Tervo Agency.
The teams combined for just seven hits, with Mason Mikesch of JPC and Chad Nordstrom of Tervo doing most of the dueling.
Tervo took an early lead after Kade Farrell singled and came around to score, but JPC got both its runs in the third after Jonah Horning doubled, then later came around to score on a throwing error. Dylan Primeau scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Nick Horning.
Leroy Bastian was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth for Tervo, but Mikesch got two K's and a comebacker to the mound to finish the game.
Mikesch allowed one hit in 4 1/3 innings of relief and struck out nine without a walk. Nordstrom pitched a complete game in defeat, allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.
In the other game, Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Superior Service 8-3 to move into Saturday's final (South Range, noon).
Nathan Isaacson had two RBI singles, while J.D. Sebbas scored twice and had an RBI double and Austin Kinnunen drove in two insurance runs with a two-RBI single in the fifth.
Ethan Jarvela pitched four innings, fanned seven and gave up two runs.
Eli Larson had Superior Service's lone hit, a hard-hit double to the fence on which he was thrown out trying to stretch to a triple.
Royale, Inc., won the Keweenaw Little League Major (age 11-12)?title Thursday, beating Lassila Insurance 10-5.
Brent Loukus was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Davin Lehto was 3-for-4 with a double, while Brandon Antilla struck out seven through 4 2/3 innings for the win.
For Lassila, Andrew Eskola, Travis Ojala and Matt Ojala had two hits apiece.
In the Major playoffs at South Range, Pat's Foods doubled up Portage Health Sports Medicine.
Portage took an early lead on Colton Salani's RBI single, but Pat's picked up three in the bottom of the inning on a walk, an Alex Nordstrom single, a Travis Pietila double and passed balls.
Portage tied it in the third after Justin Norkol's double, P.J. Donnelly's bunt hit and two fielder's choices, but Pat's took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Pat's Dmitri Kochan pulled off the safety squeeze for an insurance run in the fifth.
Both sides had five hits, but Pat's benefitted from four walks, passed balls and aggressive baserunning. Pietila and Nordstrom had two hits apiece for the winners.
Ivan Crist was winning pitcher, going five innings without a walk. He struck out eight and allowed five hits.
In the other semifinal, Team Wireless got five strong innings from Sam Keskimaki and shut out Matt's Auto Glass 5-0 to advance to Saturday's title game.
