To the editor:
The letter writer of April 29 is again showing a lack of understanding of science.
The "law" of conservation of energy may possibly be considered an axiom or postulate of physics. Axioms are statements that are considered true without proof. For example: "Two things equal to the same thing are equal to each other," or from geometry we have Playfair's postulate "Through a given point P not on a line L, there is one and only one line in the plane of P and L which does not meet L."
Concerning the law/axiom of conservation of energy, check a paper by Floris Van Vugt at the University College Utrect, The Netherlands: florisvanvugt.com/physicsfirstpaper.pdf
The Gazette letter writer states that gravity is certain. It seems so, but not proven, just extremely probable. It is a conclusion based on induction and we take induction on faith, since it is illogical to conclude that since X has occurred Y times consecutively, it's going to occur on the Y+1st time.
If one is going to use induction in a proof, then it must be considered a questionable axiom in the deductive process.
The Daily Mining Gazette welcomes letters to the editor from readers.
Letters should be signed and include name, address and telephone number. Names will not be withheld and letters should be no longer than 400 words. No personal attacks. Writers are limited to one letter per month. The Gazette reserves the right to edit letters for length, as well as for spelling and punctuation.

Nobody knows what gravity is in actuality. Isaac Newton's laws and formulas governing "action at a distance" work extremely well, but they don't tell us what gravity is, they just give a mathematical method of predicting the motion of objects like falling apples or cannon balls.
What is this mysterious "action at a distance?" Albert Einstein apparently solved this dilemma by showing that gravity can be caused by the "warping" of our space-time continuum. But how is space warped? What constitutes space? The conundrum continues.
The letter writer also states that the stars are stationary. This is news to astronomers since they calculate that our sun moves in orbit around the galactic center of the Milky Way at a breathtaking speed of 486,000 miles per hour.
And then we are told to read the Bible. I read the Hebrew Scriptures in horror over the atrocities endorsed, aided, or committed by the God depicted there. I read the Christian Scriptures and find that Jesus wants us to hate our father, mother, wife, children, and brethren (Luke 14:26), that he came not to send peace, but a sword (Matt 10:34), and God will send a strong delusion...that they all might be damned (II Thess. 2:11-12).
