EAGLE RIVER, Wis. - Neither the Calumet Wolverines nor the Portage Lake Pioneers qualified for the semifinals of the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament Saturday, but the Wolverines did claim the last laugh, winning both teams' season finales 6-5.
Calumet held the lead four times, only for Portage Lake to erase each one, then take the lead.
Josh Harju's goal off a rebound tied it at 5, and Evan Salmela scored the game-winner with a minute left.
Salmela and Logan Rastello scored two goals apiece for Calumet, while Mike Babcock had a playmaker.
For Portage Lake, Ryan Sullivan and Blake Miller each had two goals with Miller assisting on two others and Charlie Turner contributing four helpers.
Dylan Whittaker stopped 24 shots in the win, while Mike Wuthrich made 31 saves in defeat.
The result leads to an even 3-3 split in the season series.
Calumet, which finished second in the group but lost a tiebreaker to Madison for the semifinals wild card, finished its season 12-12-1. Portage Lake went 19-6.
Host Eagle River went on to beat Madison 5-4 for the tournament title.
