Overtime heartbreak for Keweenaw Storm

April 7, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Keweenaw Storm suffered overtime heartbreak in the championship game for the second time in three years at a USA Hockey Nationals, as the Chazy (N.Y.) Lady Flyers won the Tier 19U title 3-2 in the second extra period Sunday night.

The Storm, who lost the Tier II 16U title two years ago in overtime, fell behind 2-0 by the 5:45 mark of the second period, marking the first time in six tournament games they'd trailed by multiple goals.

A pair of Jessica Schlaff goals, the first at 6:47 of the second period and the second with just 4:55 to play, tied it up, sending the game to extra time.

The teams played a scoreless 10-minute period, but Kallie Villemaire scored on a deflection at 3:31 of the second overtime to give the team from upstate New York the national championship.

Keweenaw outshot Chazy 30-18 for the game and got 15 saves from goaltender Stephanie King.
