The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Our loving mother, gramma, great grandmother (Emi), sister, aunt & friend, Lyla Evelyn (Harjala) Makie, answered the Lord's call and went to Him on March 17, 2013.

Lyla was born on Aug. 3, 1923, in Gay, a daughter to the late John and Viola (Haltunen) Harjala. She moved at a young age to Copper City and lived there until three years ago, when she moved to Traprock.

She married LeRoy Makie on March 14, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 26, 2005.

Lyla was a devout Christian and a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Laurium. Her love for the Lord was evident in all that she did.

She attended school in Copper City and completed the ninth grade of High School. Lyla worked as an occasional clerk at the Post Office in Copper City, worked with her husband when he owned and operated Makie Auto Service and she later trained for and worked as a Nurse Aide at the Elder's Home in Laurium and at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility until her retirement.

Lyla spent countless hours making rag rugs, knitting, gardening, sewing, baking and doing her daily crossword puzzles and crypto quotes. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her siblings.

Preceding her in death was her husband, LeRoy; her parents; brothers, Arthur, Elmer, and Leonard "Asti"; and her sister, Leona.

Surviving are her children, Roger of Traprock and Priscilla (David) Karpinen of Calumet; two grandchildren, Melissa (Roger) Pirkola of Fla. and Diana (Mike) Langdon of Copper City; four great grandchildren, Lyla, Tessa, Luke and John; brothers, Edward (Dorothy) Harjala of Copper City, Albert (Lillian) Harjala of Ariz., and Wesley (Shirley) Harjala of Hancock; sisters-in-law, Gwen Haltunen of Copper City, Marie Harjala of Calumet, and Martha Harjala of Copper City; and numerous friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins. We all loved her dearly and will miss her.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m.on Friday March 22, 2013, in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet. Pastor Jay Weidner will officiate.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m.on Thursday and from 10-11 a.m. Friday one hour prior to the service. Spring Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at ericksoncrowley.com.

Charitable donations may be given to the Laurium Apostolic Lutheran Church 246 Tamarack St. Laurium, MI 49913.
