Dorothy J. Manninen

CALUMET - Dorothy J. Manninen, 78, of Bumbletown, died Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

She was born June 16, 1934, at the Portage Canal Coast Guard Station, a daughter of the late August and Katherine (Haveri) Kumpula and was a graduate of Calumet High School with the Class of 1952.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Manninen of Calumet on Aug. 16, 1952 and the couple made their home in Waukegan, Ill., where she worked for Abbott Laboratory.

After the birth of their first child, they returned to the Copper Country to raise their family, living in Calumet, Ontonagon, many years in White Pine, and eventually at the Manninen family homestead on Bumbletown Hill.

Dorothy loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also spent many years working from her home as a daycare provider for numerous children in White Pine whom she cared for deeply, always treating each of them as one of her own.

Surviving are her husband, Ken, of Houghton; five sons, Marvin (Kathleen) Manninen of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Steven (Debra) Manninen of Ely Lake, Mich., Brian (Mary) Manninen of Apollo Beach, Fla., Michael (Suzanne) Manninen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Scott (Paula) Manninen of Ishpeming; two daughters, Judy (Timothy) Losinski of Red Wing, Minn., Mary Schroeder of Grand Rapids; twenty-three grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two brothers, Jack (Mary) Kumpula of McGregor, Minn., and Donald Kumpula of Mohawk; two sisters, Molly (Charles) Leffler of Laurium, Stella Mottonen of Lac La Belle, special friend, Crystal Hodge; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service for Mrs. Manninen will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Laurium with Pastor Peter Vorhes officiating. Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet and one hour prior to the service at church.
