Frances M. DeCesare

HANCOCK - Frances M. DeCesare, 88, of Hancock, passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 26, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a patient since July, 2011.

She was born in Houghton to the late Joseph and Josephine (Chiminatti) LaBelle. She attended St. Ignatius, St. Joseph and Hancock Central High Schools.

Frances married Bruno DeCesare on Feb. 21, 1944. They had five children, Roberta, Victoria, Michael, Anthony and Mary Jo. Bruno preceded her in death on April 8, 1984.

As a teenager, she worked at the Orpheum Theater's concession stand making popcorn. She always looked back on those days with fondness. She also worked for a short time in the cafeteria and nursery at the former St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock.

She loved people and her door was always open to everyone. She enjoyed crocheting, working crossword puzzles and picking agates. She was a talented artist in many mediums.

She had crocheted a special Christmas stocking for each of her grandchildren and several great-grandchildren before her eyesight failed. She loved to cook and bake and was well known for her homemade spaghetti sauce and weekly Sunday dinners.

She enjoyed making Sunday dinner for her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren well into her 80's. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Even the kids in the neighborhood called her Grandma Fran. She always had cookies and her candy bowl was never empty.

She and her sisters, Joan and Pat were known to family and friends as the Golden Girls.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; four infant sisters; her granddaughter, Sarah Jo Rivest; her sisters, Marie Pierce and Joan Dulong.

She is survived by her children: Roberta (Louis) Fredianelli, Victoria (James) Fredianelli, Michael (Marian), Anthony (Judy) and Mary Jo (Ron) Rivest; Ten grandchildren, Brian (Shari) Fredianelli, Beth Fredianelli, David (Gina) Fredianelli, Jomarie (Ryan) Wakeham, Lisa (Tim) McCormick, Andrea (Martin) Ferguson, April (John) DeCesare, Eric (Amanda) DeCesare, Jennifer (Jesse) Garrow and Joseph (Brandi) Rivest; her 24 great-grandchildren, Dominic, Katie, Ben, Alan (Nikki), Robert, Michaela, Michael (Amanda), Evan (Jenn), Alicia, Payne, Daisy, Willow Frances, Jace, Logan, Jeremy, Blake, Nicholas, Hunter, John, Bailey, Kylie, Sawyer, Cole and Teagan; four great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Amber, William and Jacob.

She is further survived by her brother, Bernard LaBelle and sister, Patricia Decker, both of Hancock; Gerald Harry, a close friend of the family; sister-in-law, Gloria Lorenz; brother-in-law, Theodore (Betty) Lozano; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a faithful member of Church of the Resurrection attending Mass weekly up until two weeks before her death. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Father Brian Gerber to officiate. Spring burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Friends may call in the church for an hour before Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to St. Vincent dePaul Society, 204 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930 or to Church of the Resurrection, 900 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930.

The O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is assisting with arrangements.
