Cruel finish to Finlandia men’s hockey season

February 18, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

ADRIAN, Mich. - The season ended in most painful fashion for the Finlandia men's hockey team Saturday.

The Lions were shut out 2-0 by Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association regular season champions Adrian, then learned of their elimination from the MCHA Playoffs on a tiebreaker.

Finlandia and Adrian played 59 scoreless minutes until Lukas Ciotti scored for the Bulldogs with 35 seconds to play. Zach Graham added an empty-netter.

The Lions put 27 shots on Adrian goalie James Hamby but none of them got through.

Elsewhere, a series of results worked against the Lions. Finlandia entered the day tied with both Lawrence and Northland for the last two playoff spots in the North Division. Northland was routed 10-3 at Milwaukee School of Engineering, but while the Lions were on the road home, Lawrence and Lake Forest skated to a 2-2 tie, handing the Vikings the No. 2 seed. Northland and Finlandia split four games in the regular season, so the final playoff spot went down to goal difference in those four games, which the Lumberjacks carried 19-18.

Had Lawrence lost, Finlandia would have got in, as it would have a better record within the three-way tie than Northland.

The Lions finish 7-18 overall and 7-13 in league play.

In Superior, Wis., Finlandia lost 6-1 at Wisconsin-Superior in its women's hockey finale, concluding the campaign 0-24.
