Eleanor Lee Helakoski

LAWSON, Mich. -Eleanor Lee Helakoski, age 95, longtime Chassell and White Pine resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2013, in the Bronson Nursing Center in Lawson, Mich.

She was born September 28, 1917, to the late Ward and Lillian (Carlson) Lee and graduated from Ewen High School at age 16.

Eleanor was the wife of basketball coach, Edward Helakoski; mother of Janine (Fred) Maxeiner of Pittsburgh, Penn., Leeann (Terry) Netzer of Wilmington, Del. and Ward (Leslie) Helakoski of Mattawan, Mich,; grandmother of six; great-grandmother of one; sister of Anabel (Don) Kostelny of Newburgh, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Geraldine and Bertha.

Eleanor will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother as well as an avid reader and baker of cookies.

She was active in the White Pine Athletic Booster Club and was known as "The First Lady of Sports" in White Pine. Throughout her life, she was a loyal basketball fan of the Boston Celtics and her husband's and son's basketball teams from the Chassell Panthers in the 1950s, White Pine Warriors and Forest Park Trojans.

The family will hold a private memorial service this summer in Elearnor's honor in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ewen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Chassell Historical Organization, PO Box 31, Chassell, MI 49916.
