CALUMET - James Anthony Roberts, 73, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for the past three days.
James was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Calumet, a son of Frederick and Ethel (Nelson) Roberts. He was a graduate of Calumet High School with the Class of 1958. He then attended Michigan Tech, graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1963.
James worked for UPPCO in Marquette at the Presque Isle Station Power Plant and in the Houghton office for 35 years, retiring in 1998. He was involved in designing the substations for the U.S. Navy's ELF Project and the Ropes Gold Mine. He also taught wiring at Tech.
On Aug. 30, 1958, James married the former Karen Aho in Calumet.
James was a member of the Keweenaw Sportsman's Club, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers and the NRA.
He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt. He tried everything and was truly a jack-of-all-trades. He was a ham radio operator, had his mechanics license and loved cooking, grocery shopping and food. James supported local hockey and enjoyed helping the kids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bruce Roberts; a sister, Donna Horn; a brother-in-law, James Horn; and an aunt, Alice Nelson.
James is survived by his wife, Karen; two sons, Bruce (Tracey) Roberts of Marquette and Kevin (Melissa) Roberts of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Chris (Glenn) Patrick of Mohawk and Laurie Ann (Dan) Harter of Calumet; grandchildren, Jamie, Joshua, Marissa, Nick (Lauren), Ryan, Jesse (Bailey), Allie, Mike and Lucas; great-grandchildren, Noah, Austin, Madelyn, Hailey, Jakob and McKendzie; brothers-in-law, Richard (JoAnn) Aho of Austin, Minn. and Keith (JoAnne) Klobuchar of Calumet; sister-in-law Mary (George) Arko of Trenton, Mich.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Peter Vorhes to officiate. Friends may call in the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
