Roundup: E-TC edges L’Anse, Jeffers rolls

January 26, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

EWEN - L'Anse executed an effective containment strategy on Ewen-Trout Creek's Dillon Gordon, but not effective enough to win its non-conference road game, as the Panthers pulled out the 54-51 decision.

L'Anse trailed by two in the closing seconds until a Gordon steal and a split pair of free throws made it a three-point game. The Panthers then got one more steal on the inbounds pass to run out the clock.

"We got a couple of stops at the end and we were sound with the ball toward the end," E-TC coach Brad Besonen said.

Making up for Gordon, who was held to a season-low 10 points, the Panthers got three other double-figure scorers: Keith Kauss (14), Lane Brown (13) and Mike Borseth (10).

E-TC led by as many as 13 in the third quarter, but the Hornets, who had balanced scoring of their own with three players in double figures, whittled away at the advantage while keeping Gordon under control.

"They had three different guys that were working him hard on the ball and their help was really early. They did a good job of making him do something else with it."

James Veker had 12 to lead L'Anse (4-7), which also got 11 from Jacob Ostermeyer and 10 from Brett Martinez. The Purple Hornets are at rival Baraga Tuesday night.

Ewen-Trout Creek, now 8-2, won the JV game and plays a make-up game at Lake Linden-Hubbell tonight.
