LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Karl Mella, 72, passed away Jan. 20, 2013, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
He was born Sept. 28, 1940, in Laurium, the son of Ernest and Gertrude Mella.
He was united in marriage to Janette Heikkinen Aug. 11, 1984.
Karl graduated from Calumet High School and attended Suomi College and Wayne State University.
He is remembered in his hometown as a good baseball player. He played Twilight League baseball and softball and coached Little League teams. He auditioned for the Detroit Tigers when he was very young. He also enjoyed golfing with his friends and relatives.
Karl retired from Luther Manor in Milwaukee in 2002 and moved to Greers Ferry Lake, AR. While at Luther Manor, he managed a co-ed softball team and organized an employee co-ed golf league and a Lutheran Manor bowling league for employees and spouses.
He was great at planning get-togethers like group Brewer baseball tailgate parties and attending games, summer picnics and annual banquets. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and that he would always brighten one's day.
Karl was a lifelong Atlanta Braves and Green Bay Packer fan. He traveled to Atlanta last Sept. to see a few Braves games and his favorite player, Chipper Jones.
When he was not watching his favorite baseball or football teams, he enjoyed doing yardwork, crossword puzzles and managing his "fantasy" sports teams on line.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Steven; and granddaughter, Kortnie.
He is survived by his wife, Janette; daughters, Lisa (Kevin) McGilvary, Angela (Mike) Sommers; step-daughters, Cheryl (Randy) Richeson and Gail (Gred) Duchow; grandchildren, Emily, Savannah, Kenneth, Kyle, Rebecca and Jack; dearly known as Papa Karl to step-granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca; his retirement companion dog, Abby, whom he loved so dearly.
