2 snowmobile accidents in Kew. Cty.

Dollar Bay resident transported to Aspirus Keweenaw

GRANT?TOWNSHIP?- On Thursday, the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office investigated two personal injury snowmobile accidents that occurred in Grant and Houghton townships.

The first accident occurred on Trail No. 3 near M-26 in Copper Harbor. At 3 p.m., a 2001 Arctic Cat driven by Walter M. Glenn, 43, of Palatine, Ill., was northbound approaching a T intersection. Glenn was unable to negotiate the corner and drove off the trail, impacted a snow berm, was ejected from the snowmobile and struck a tree. Glenn was treated on scene by Copper Harbor First Responders and transported via Mercy EMS to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital with leg injuries.

The second accident occurred on Trail No. 124 near Trail No. 3 in Phoenix. A 2002 Polaris snowmobile driven by June Schraufnagel, 54, of Dollar Bay, was rounding a corner northbound when a 2012 Ski-Doo driven by Matthew Robins, 34, of Laingsburg, Mich., entered the corner and crossed the path of Schraufnagel.

The resulting collision injured Schraufnagel and caused extensive damage to both machines. Deputies were assisted on scene by Allouez Township First Responders and the?Ahmeek Village Volunteer Fire Department rescue unit. Schraufnagel was transported by Mercy EMS to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. Robins was cited for failing to use due care and caution.

Alcohol was not a factor in either accident.
