CALUMET - The Calumet boys basketball team improved to 3-0 this season with a 55-27 win over Dollar Bay Monday.
The Copper Kings dominated the first quarter, opening up ahead 27-5 after the initial eight minutes. Calumet put it in cruise control from there, getting 10 different players on the scoresheet.
"Obviously we got off to a quick start," Calumet coach Mike Ojala said. "We just talked about wanting to come out with a good defensive mindset early. We got out and ran really well early and got a few fast break buckets on them. Everybody got minutes to night and its nice to get everyone in."
Junior guard Paul Torola led the way with 21 points, including 15 in the first quarter.
"He really had it going tonight," Ojala said.
The Copper Kings are home again next Monday against Lake Linden-Hubbell.
Dollar Bay (0-2), which got a team-high 11 points from Tom Dunstan, has a Thursday home date with Ontonagon.

L'ANSE - What L'Anse lacked in intensity in last Thursday's 71-50 WestPAC loss to Houghton, it had Monday night at home against non-conference Westwood.
The Purple Hornets nearly doubled up the Patriots every quarter and eight different players contributed to a 52-28 victory.
"We played good defense and rebounded very well," L'Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said. "Our intensity level was where it needed to be.
"After the game in Houghton last week left a sour taste in our mouth, we wanted to play our game and we did."
Houghton's full-court pressure flustered L'Anse (2-1), but the Purple Hornets were ready this time, only turning the ball over seven times when Westwood (0-2) came with similar man-to-man length-of-the-court defense.
Jimmy Veker led all scorers with 22 points, dropping jumpers, slashing the lane and pounding the offensive boards.
"He did a little bit of everything tonight," Ostermeyer said.
Daniel Perrow and Keith Denomie each chipped in nine points to the victory, as the Purple Hornets only allowed three Patriots to score, led by Travis Swanson's 11 points.
L'Anse returns to WestPAC play Thursday when it hosts West Iron County.
