The Daily Mining Gazette

LAKE LINDEN - Mary R. Altman passed away Dec. 4, 2012, at the age of 105 at the Pewabic House of PortagePointe, where she had been a resident for the past year and a half. Mary was born March 10, 1907, a daughter of Peter and Josephine (Duteau) Baril, in Lake Linden. She graduated from Lake Linden High School in 1927 and in 1931 she graduated as a registered nurse from Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in Flint.

Mary proudly served her country in World War II as a first lieutenant in the United States Army Nursing Corps and was honorably discharged in February 1946.

She married Otto Altman on Jan. 15, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1959.

Mary was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Baril, Edward Baril, Albert Baril, Peter Baril and George (Nora) Baril; sisters, Rose Piche and Celina Knott.

Mary was a member of St. Joseph Church. She will be remembered as a kind and caring person, an inspiration to those who knew her. Mary was an excellent baker; she enjoyed fishing, her bridge club and gardening. She felt it was important to remain active and maintain a positive attitude; and whenever possible, "worked out" in the fitness center, as well as volunteering at PortagePointe.

Mary is survived by nephew, Henry (Joyce) Piche; nieces, Carol Adams, Mary (Thomas) Tippett, Suzanne Knott, Mary (Darwin) Babcock, Anne (Roy) LaLiberte, Denise (Gary) Loden, Cherie (Dan) Smith; special grand nieces, Jean Adams, Katie (Bruce) Pyykkonen and special grand nephew Felix (Virginia) Fournier.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with an American Legion service at 7 and parish prayer service at 7:30. Burial will be at the New Calvary Cemetery in Flint, Mich.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church or the charity of one's choice.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at PortagePointe and to Dr. Sigurds Janners for the loving care they gave to Mary. Their special friendship, warmth, compassion and caring will always be remembered and appreciated.

The Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden is in charge of arrangements.
