Book Fair helps students

December 4, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

We would like to thank the students, staff, families and community members who helped to make the annual Houghton Elementary School Book Fair a huge success. From their support we were able to raise $2,600 for the Houghton Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, purchase $515 worth of books for our library and donate six books to Toys for Tots (collected from change donated at the fair). It was great to see so many children excited about books and reading and very heartwarming to see them dropping their change into the Toys for Tots collection box.

Every successful event has many people helping behind the scenes, from the parents that brought in items for the teacher preview brunch or worked the fair, to Mr. Aldrich (our principal) who strongly supported the fair from the planning stages. We thank our fourth and fifth grade students who helped to promote the fair, Ms. Rutz, Ms. Hronkin and Mr. Lawson who incorporated some aspect of the fair into the curriculum, and Ms Wiitanen for leading students through the book fair during library time. Thanks also to Mr. Klein for being a good sport about wearing the green and gold for a day when he would much rather wear the blue and silver.

In addition to tremendous schoolwide support, we are grateful to our community partners. Thank you to the sponsors of our guessing contest: Portage Lake Golf Course and Houghton High School Athletics. We also thank No. 1 All Star Reader, Blizzard T. Husky, for coming by to shop the fair with students and families. All proceeds from the book fair go to support school equipment, field trips, library resources and events for Houghton Elementary School students. Thanks again to everyone for your support.
