KINGSFORD - William James Hodges, 82, of Kingsford, passed away on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born on May 21, 1930, in Calumet, son of the late Wilbert and Gertrude (Toms) Hodges. He attended the Calumet schools, graduating from Calumet High School in 1948. He then went on to attend Michigan Tech University for two years. Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, before being honorably discharged.
He married Joan Lewis on Sept. 21, 1957, at the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet. Bill went on to work with the Michigan State Police, retiring in 1982 as the rank of Sergeant. He moved his family from Bad Axe, Mich., to Kingsford in 1967, and they have been residents here ever since.
For most of his years, Bill loved to fish, hunt and spend time working on projects at home and the cottage. After retiring from the State Police Bill was a business owner, realtor and finally retired as the City of Kingsford Tax Assessor in 1995.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robb Borchardt; a sister, Merle Pollitt; and his in-laws, Wallace and Helen Lewis.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of more than 55 years, Joan Hodges of Kingsford; a son, Michael Hodges of Farmington Hills, Mich.; a daughter, Nancy Borchardt of New London, Wis.; a grandson, Jadyn Hodges of Farmington Hills, Mich.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at noon at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be Chuck Hinman, Dave Lemke, Roger Sodini, Keith Dennis, Marty Alstrom, and Tom Berlo.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in his memory.
