Shoeboxes help kids

November 26, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

Recently, Operation Christmas Child, a function of Samaritan's Purse, held the annual collection week for shoeboxes. These shoeboxes contain basic fundamentals and messages of love to kids worldwide who need them most.

Our collection point in Dollar Bay collected 578 boxes from the Keweenaw. Those boxes are now in Minneapolis, on their way to kids worldwide.

On behalf of Samaritan's Purse, thank you for packing a box. Your simple gifts mean so much to these children, many of whom have no resources or no family. You have made such a difference for each kid who opens your box.

We'd like to especially thank the churches and groups who collected gifts from their members for drop off: Apostolic Lutheran Church in Laurium, Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay, the Brownie troop in Lake Linden, Copper Country Christian School in Chassell, CRU at Michigan Technological University, Evangel Baptist Church in Houghton, Gloria Dei Lutheran in Hancock, Grace United Methodist in Houghton, Greenland United Methodist, Maranatha Free Lutheran in Chassell, North Point Church in Lake Linden, Pelkie Mennonite Church, Redeemer Free Lutheran in Ontonagon, and Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Houghton.

Thank you also to the many volunteers and leaders who organized and collected boxes within their churches. Thanks also to the volunteers who staffed the collection center.
