To the editor:
The Keweenaw ATV Club would like to thank the city of Houghton for addressing a serious legal and safety issue for ATV riders.
Through adoption of Ordinance No. 2012-252 on Oct. 24, ATV/UTV riders are now able to use authorized access routes along the streets within the city of Houghton and utilize pre-scheduled (9:15 a.m. and 1:15 and 6:15 p.m.), escorted crossing of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
This is a very good example of cooperation between cities, police officers and local clubs. The arrangements for police escorts will be handled when ATV riders call 482-2121. If the police are not able to provide an escort, local towing services can be called. We recognize the police are busy and really appreciate the extra effort they are giving this program. This is the answer to safety issues.
