Thanks-for-giving

November 23, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

Some things really get you around the holidays when you work at a non-profit organization. Like most people, my short week will be filled with last minute trips to the store, and other Thanksgiving planning for my family dinner. But when I come to the Beacon House and walk down the hall, my focus changes from giving thanks for what I have to giving thanks for what so many people have given to make this "house" a "home."

When I think of all the well-attended events we've hosted this year to raise funds, and all the amazing people who send checks with notes that said, "Just because I know you need it," I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for our neighbors here in the Upper Peninsula. While I'm trying to decide what dishes to use for dinner on Thursday, many of our guests are deciding the best way to handle a recent diagnosis of cancer. Or how to help their Dad face his upcoming heart surgery. And how to spend as much time as possible with their tiny baby in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The many gifts you've shared with Beacon House give all those people one less thing to worry about. Your support makes it possible for a guest to sleep only blocks away from their loved ones, and be back by their side at the hospital when the morning comes.

When there is good news, your gift provides them with a kitchen to prepare a meal in, and when there is bad news, a quiet lounge to contemplate the next steps. Beacon House becomes "home" to these lovely people from Calumet, Ironwood, Sault Ste. Marie, Iron Mountain and every other town nearby, because of you.

So Thanks-for-Giving. Giving to people you many never meet, but who will always be grateful to you.
