Mary E. Klein

HANCOCK - Mary E. Klein, 95, of Hancock, crossed over to Eternal Life on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Pewabic House of Portage Pointe where she had been a resident. Previously, she resided at Arbor Green in Houghton, for over 20 years.

Mary was born in Port Washington, Wis., on Oct. 7, 1917, a daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Paine) Kendall, and was a 1935 graduate of the Port Washington High School.

On Oct. 26, 1938, she married George "Dutch" Klein in Port Washington. In 1949, they moved from Wisconsin to Michigan. They had twelve children and resided most of their married life in Mesnard Location. George passed away on Oct. 13, 1967.

Mary was employed for several years at Gino's Restaurant in Hancock, where she was a waitress, ravioli maker and also did cleaning at the restaurant. She also provided child care for several years while living at Arbor Green.

Mary was a member of Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, and the former Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Franklin Township, where she served on the Altar Society.

She had a strong faith, praying the rosary on a daily basis.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She provided her family with a warm and loving home. She was a wonderful baker, making loaves of fresh homemade bread was part of her daily routine. She enjoyed picking apples and berries for baking and canning. In her younger years she was a self taught seamstress and later in life, knitted gifts for her family. Her daily recreation was reading, playing cards and other games. She enjoyed being in the outdoors, especially cross country skiing and golfing.

Surviving are her children, Carol Egerer of Cedar Grove, Wis., Pat (Pete) Poggione of Hancock, Marji (Pete) Nutini of Oconto, Wis., Betty (Pete) Wickley of Chassell, Kathy (Dave) Wanhala of Hancock, Barbara (Mike) Wilmers of Houghton, Nick (Gerri) Klein of Hancock, Kris (Randy) Oertel of Houston, Texas, John Klein (Cindy Juntunen) of Tapiola, Jim (Jenise) Klein of Elo, Phil (Marie) Klein of Manchester, N. H. and Mary Beth (Steve) Laiti of Tampa, Fla.; 39 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Beside her parents and husband, Mary was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank; three sisters, Helen, Ruth and Dorothy; a son-in-law, Marvin Egerer; a granddaughter, Barbara Egerer.

The family would like to thank the staff at PortagePoint for the wonderful care given to their mother over the years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, with Fr. Brian Gerber as celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday at the church. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
