PAINESDALE - Joseph J. "Sookie" Sergey Sr., 88, of (Seeberville) Painesdale, died on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
He was born in Trimountain, Mich., on Nov. 18, 1923, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gepkovna) Sergey.
Joseph attended the Painesdale School and worked briefly in the Civilian Conservation Corp before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. After an 18-month deployment overseas and discharge from the Navy, he worked at Stella Cheese in Baltic and then moved to Chicago for two years where he worked at Olson Rug Factory. Upon returning to the Copper Country, Joseph worked at Horner Flooring and the White Pine Copper Mine. Joseph retired in 1979, after 20 years of service at the mine.
As a young man, Joseph enjoyed playing hockey. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to the casino. Joseph loved his family very much and especially enjoyed family get-togethers.
Joseph was a member of Ranger Post 6165 VFW of South Range.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Stephanie "Babe" Reining of Chicago, Emmaline "Kitty" Grabinski of Chicago, Mary "Mazie" Karvonen of Detroit and Helen Pozinger of Baltic.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph (Susan) Sergey of Calumet, Jeffrey Sergey of Marquette, Rick Sergey of Minneapolis, Minn; one daughter, Debbie Gagnon of Houghton; and their sister, Carol Saari; six grandchildren, Jeremy and Troy Sergey, Grant Gagnon, Becky (Jason) Christoff, Wendy (Greg) Davis and Dena Yrjana; two great-grandchildren, Jaden Davis and Wyatt Christoff; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday at the mortuary. Burial with military rites will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
