Safety first this holiday weekend

May 25, 2010
The Daily Mining Gazette

Nice weather arrived prior to the traditional Memorial Day holiday weekend kick-off to the travel, recreation and vacation season, sending just about anybody who can get there outside to enjoy whatever it is they love to do.

From biking, hiking, camping and canoeing to four-wheeling, fishing, boating, cook-outs and baseball, there's so much to do and have fun doing.

We want everybody to have a great time, but remember to be safe. Remain mindful of the current fire danger warnings and wear helmets, life vests and other proper gear when enjoying the outdoors.

It's also good to remain aware of changing weather conditions, which can shift dramatically in such a short period of time in our area.

Beyond the countless outdoor activities to enjoy, this is also the season of graduation parties, weddings and other social events, putting even more people on the highways, heading in a hurry to get where they need to be.

Add to all of this hectic activity the requisite flurry of local highway construction projects with their unfamiliar detours, signs, cones and other markers to negotiate and the unfortunate fact the a certain number of individuals will continue to decide to drink and then drive, and you've got a whole world of opportunity for accidents to happen.

There is so much going on out there. All the more reason to remain alert, cautious and aware when driving.

This is one of the best times of the year to be out and about in the Upper Peninsula. We wish everyone the safest vacation season possible.

Whether you are traveling near or far, have a great time, but as the slogan says, "safety first."
