Linda Susan (Haapala) Schaaf
CHASSELL - Linda Susan (Haapala) Schaaf passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 5, 2010.
She was born on November 14, 1948, in Astoria Ore. She moved to Chassell with her family and graduated from Chassell High School. She attended NMU and entered the work force.
Her career started with the Houghton County Road Commission where she met Jack Schaaf whom she married on May 7, 1977.
Linda worked for Community Action Meals on Wheels, Houghton County Airport and Pamida in Houghton. For many years, she worked as a private home aide and with Keweenaw Home Services. In 2000, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of graduating with her BS degree in human resources from Finlandia University. After earning her degree, she worked at the Good Will Farm and as a substitute teacher around Houghton and Baraga Counties.
Throughout her life, Linda was involved with many activities, including Portage Lake Figure Skating Club, Houghton County Fair, 4-H, Girl Scouts and Copper Country Junior Hockey Association even though none of her children were in hockey. She was a member of the Chassell Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 6507 in Chassell. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross as a Health and Safety Instructor for over 20 years and was a founding member of the Chassell First Responders.
Mrs. Schaaf was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell where she served many years as Sunday School Superintendent.
He love was her family, her farm and in recent years, her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; parents, Edwin and Adele Haapala; and brother, Edwin Haapala, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Robin (McKinley) Anderson of Salem, Ala., Dawn (Rhys) Edwards of Chassell, Jennifer Schaaf of Perkinston, Miss.; a son, Jason (Angel) Schaaf of Chassell; grandchildren, Kaila and Jada Anderson, Thomas-Jack and Noah Edwards, and Jordan, Jacie, Jack and Judd Schaaf; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Funeral services for Linda will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with Rev. Ron Strobel to officiate.
Spring burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.
Friends may call on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 12 noon until time of services at the church. Ladies VFW Auxiliary 6507 of Chassell will hold services at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell.
