Copper Country MSP trooper layoffs reversed

By Garrett Neese, DMG Writer
POSTED: November 7, 2009

CALUMET - Michigan State Police posts in the Copper Country will benefit from the recall of 55 state troopers who had been laid off in June.

The Calumet and L'Anse posts will both get at least one trooper back, said Trooper Greg Filpus of the L'Anse post.

"That's going to provide a lot of relief for us," he said. "It's nice having that additional help. That's going to improve the coverage, and I think those benefits are obvious."

The 55 troopers will be recalled based on seniority on Nov. 16. In May, MSP spokeswoman Shanon Akans said 18 of the troopers to be laid off were from the December 2004 graduating class, with the rest coming from the next graduating class in 2008.

"Hopefully they'll all come back eventually, but we'll just have to wait and see," Filpus said.

State Rep. Mike Lahti, D-Hancock, applauded the news.

"It's good that they're being brought back, but this budget is tough. There are cuts all over," he said. "Hopefully the number they brought back are sufficient until the economy comes back."

The troopers are part of a group of 100 laid off in June due to state budget constraints.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm approved a budget last month that included hiring back 55 troopers. Granholm had halted plans on Wednesday to rehire the troopers pending a review of state tax receipts.

With the recall, there will be 1,000 troopers in the state.

What brilliance is exhibited in these responses. How some people can read so much into a simple story is beyond belief. Idiots. Personally, I am happy that the police are being recalled both for their own employment and the good of the counties they serve.

TruePatriot- your about as much of a patriot as the Army officer who killed his fellow soilders down in Texas. You took the same oath I did and lived it as I did (22yrs) for 20 yrs and yet you support our current government taking over all aspects of our lives??? Wow! I don't know what branch you served in but you give them a bad name. You claim to be a true patriot becouse you served and yet you try to stifle our Freedom of Speach by calling everyone who disagrees with you a "Radical anti-government teabagger. Have you gone totally mad or are you just pretending to have served? Methinks alittle of both.

Some facts for you all. The sheriff department has crew of deputies on road patrol 100% of the time whereas the Calumet State Police post has troopers on the road most likely 60% of the time. They need more troopers here to cover the calls for service. It's not just about writing tickets people. There are many investigations that take many, many hours to investigate. When you have one trooper on the road doing investigations, taking complaints, court duty, report writing, etc you basically have no road patrol time. Most of what the police do in our area is done in larger metropolitan areas with many, many police officers along with several detectives who do the investigations for the officers. Here in small areas the local police officers do all their own investitations and reports most of the time from start to finish which is extremely time consuming. Both the sheriff department and state police take calls all over the county and do not have a desinated area.

I'm glad they have their jobs back and all..but what coverage, is there a giant crime rate up here that I missed? Or is driving 65 in a 55 a felony? Do we even have speed limits over 35 up here? This isn't Detroit we don't need thousands of cops, but glad they have their jobs back everyone needs to work.

It's the county boys that do all the important stuff, why is this funding not going to them? There are bigger issues at hand then giving people speeding tickets...

Reality Check TrueMarxist! So you hate real Americans Conservatives & Independents Doesn't have to be Reps or Dems! So you cry, you want the teabaggers being hammered down by the law enforcement! Since You Libs like you have all the time in the world to protest! Conservatives (not phonies) independents & very few real liberals with real common sense values we don't have the time to protest & take many days off from work since we have bills to pay to support our families! Now your currant President & radical Marxist Dems! is getting out of control So we the real Americans conservatives, Independents, & some Real Liberals of the old! is making the time to protest even if we have to miss couple days of work or getting risk of getting fired from taking too much time off! even we use our vacations days to protest to cancel of family time! Yes we real americans hammer down on bush & his phony Reps on what they been doing to this country! we hammer both sides!

You're right williaminpelkie, it's common knowledge that these forums are for government moochers who sit at home all day and wait for the DMG to post new articles so they can rant in order to alleviate their "working man" blues. How dare a righty or independent...y infiltrate your only apparent leftist mouthpiece. Well, other than maybe yelling at the tv when Glenn Beck is on.

You do get cable out there right?

Riutta1966, you mistake this forum for the Glenn Beck fan club. Your paranoid and crazy postings only demonstrate how much disconnect you have from reality. Best you go secrete yourself back into the right-wing cesspool from whence you crawled!

Great to see Troopers back on the job. Looks like they will be needed to deal with the unrest caused by the Bush Depression.

farm4me.. they do not patrol the same area(for the most part) there is an imformal agreement between the msp and the sheriff. the msp patrols and responds to north of the portage bridge including keweenaw county and the sheriff covers south of the bridge. either one can respond to any call, the closest and available dept responds both cover a very large area.

funny, all the people who were called commies and marxists during the vietnam war ended up to be right. even robert Mcnamara admitted to that. how come so many of those (real) americans, (aka phony patriots ) aren't signing up for military service. oh that's right! they're the party of chicken hawks. all bluster and deferments.isn't it funny how many so called marxists served in the military, versus faux news cry babies, and talk radio big mouths. i'd rather be a leftist radical and fight for the average person rights, than a stooge for the ruling class. we wear that moniker proudly!

So why not just allocate the money for additional Deputies for the Sheriffs dept? Every aspect of each individual department has redundancy. We (Taxpayers) pay for supervisors and facilities for MSP when in fact they patrol the same areas as the sheriffs dept. Times are tough....cut the crap. How many more cops could we have on the road if we werent paying for MSP posts etc.....time to consolidate!

It's nice to see some of them coming back to work, but when seconds count the cops are minutes away. Life or death situation, they're never there on time.

BobbyH,, so when you need the police for something and nobody comes for hours or so and then you may question that we need the state police here in our area to assist the sheriff department.

We're better off without those ticket-jockeys!

All they do is sit at the roadside and reach into your wallet on behalf of the corrupt court system.

Very glad the Troopers are back on the job, both because they are needed and for their own sake. What a messed up state this is. Who's running it, again? Oh, that's right, Jen Granholm. What a joke.
