Still going for the green

POSTED: November 7, 2009

To the editor:

The Copper Country Soccer Association is going for the green ... grass, that is.

On Sept. 26, hundreds came to the Hurontown fields to be a part of the action and enjoy some fantastic food.

We are truly grateful to Houghton Bottling Company, Vollwerth's , Taystee bread, for great snacks from Jim Mewbourne and company, our team of super kids who proudly served food - Logan, Kody and Deanna Maki, Dayton Markham, Wes Hyslop, Aiden and Reilly Quinn, Casey Labelle, Jeffrey and Jaycee Herrela, and to the families who donated home baked sweet treats and wonderful food that helped warm and satisfy the soccer families out on that blustery day.

We would not have had all the enthusiastic folks who showed up to witness the expanse of four huge fields being leveled to begin to realize the CCSA's dream of fields of our own without the support of our great media partners: WMPL, WKMJ, K-BEAR, WGLI, WOLV and The Daily Mining Gazette.

Huge credit also goes to the what adds up to hundreds of hours of work from all the great companies who have donated their time, gas, money and equipment, as well as the men and women who are out there leveling the fields and creating this amazing place to play: Martineau and Morris Contractors, Jim Tercha, Roger Helman, U.P. Engineers and Architects, Yalmer Mattila Contracting, Inc., Hyrkas Gravel, Wilbert Mattson, Inc., Mark Zenner, Jeff Jepson, Carl Etapa, Tyler Becia, the Portage Township Board, John Pekkala, Bob Barron, Erickson Feed and Seed, DP Construction, Kim Maki, Superior Rent All, Nick Daavettila, 1431st Engineer Company from Calumet and Baraga, the CCSA families that helped with field prep; and special thanks to the gang who choose "to serve" in more ways than one: Dean Wolter, Todd Paulson, Bill and Joe Schwandt, Kurt Abramson, Jamie and Timery LaBonte.

The Copper Country Soccer Association is empowering its members and our community as owners of this amazing place to play by creating teams to quite literally hand build four new soccer fields. Every day we feel blessed to grow our soccer family with these gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We're not done yet so come join our team. For more information coppercountrysoccer.org, or to support CCSA's fields, call 482-1882.

Imagine. Dream. Make it happen. Together, we can.
