We deserve better than this mess

POSTED: October 30, 2009

We hate to say it, but we told you so. Look at what is happening with the latest fiasco called passing a state budget and look at who is caught in the middle of the battle - our children.

We have said for months now that all of this bickering back and forth was nothing more than a smokescreen to force people to agree to raise taxes in this state; however, we were hoping it would not stoop to the level it has in involving our childrens' future.

It appears as though that is the way our government wants to work and now it is a battle between Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Republican-led Senate and its leader Mike Bishop. Who is going to win this battle is yet to be seen. We still don't like the fact it has come down to this.

Schools already were facing one round of cuts and that was going to hurt some schools as there is not much leather left to be notched in that ever tightening belt. Now, Granholm has decided to make another round of cuts saying it is necessary to meet the projected shortfall.

That is where it seems to start to get fuzzy in Lansing and we all are left wondering who is telling the truth.

Granholm says the cuts are necessary, Bishop says the cuts are not needed, and now a non-partisan Senate agency has come out and said maybe we should wait to see if cuts are necessary. It is enough to make a person want to take a bottle of aspirin.

No matter the case, it should not have come to this. Both sides should have gotten together to hash out this mess that has been looming for months and is not going to get better. No, instead they want our children in the middle as pawns in this battle. That is not good government. It is time we stand up and say enough is enough. It is time Lansing starts dealing with the issues at hand. If not, then maybe it is time to clean house and elect a legislative body that will do what it is supposed to do and not do whatever it takes to get re-elected. This state, its citizens - and more importantly the children - deserve better than that.

A fair wage is a moral issue. Fair to whom? Who's morals. Mandating higher wages than a market supports only results in less employment and/or higher cost of goods. This is inflationary. Would it be fair to still be paying top dollar for a blacksmith. No, the market for them is gone. Obvioulsy the market for union shops is drying up. Anyone support card check. Perhaps this will save union membership. Research! You cannot use commodity to describe labor and then throw morality as the guide for determining the cost of that commodity. Labor is not a commodity. A commodity is something like corn or kraft paper. Not much difference between the kernels. A mason is very different from an autoline assembly man. The two are not ubiquitous. Even two masons could be different. One could be entry-level the other have 30 years experience. Unskilled labor may be closer to being a commodity. One what trading board could I find labor listed. I need to know the going rates.

TruePatriot, companies can and do offer health insurance to their employees without being a union shop. I've had 3 jobs in traditionally non union skills area that offered good benefits. Why would they do this? There weren't competitive union jobs to compete with....hmmmmmm.

Also the 6 highest paid jobs I've had have all been non-union. The union job came in @ #7. Along with being lower pay, they had the least amount of vacation, and among the highest cost for health insurance. Oh, I "only" have a high school education, so the top 6 weren't anything fancy

Labor is not the biggest cost of producing an auto. Do some research. Labor is a commodity. Demand drives up wages for everyone. Rushfan, you listen too much to the *********drug addled gas bag that goes on trips to Haiti with a big bottle of ******. I did not know this until I heard it on the radio, but Haiti has the reputation for young boy prostitution. This is your hero. You and Riutta sound like you are part of the immoral organization, "The Chamber of Commerce". If it was still up to them,,we would still have slavery. Henry Ford was right when he paid his workers more then the going rate because he knew if you give them a fair wage, they could afford to buy things like cars and ect. A fair wage is a moral issue. Using your logic, lets just cut wages to $1/day. Just think how cheap things would be. Tell you what, why don't you lead by example.

dude even if toyota gave in to the unions that means they would have to pay more $$ to the workers and it will force them to raise the price on their cars! to cover the cost of the union so get real union is crap! it's becoming a ponzi scheme!

TP may be right about unions creating wage/salary inflation. I had the same thought. But the consequence is everything else costs more too. The union house. The union car. Its all relative. So I make a good salary because of a union. I also pay a union premium if I buy something. Economics is still at work. You artificially raise wages - you raise the cost of those same goods the union produces. Let's make the union wage 1 million a year for a copper miner. The price of a copper wire will reflect this. So will your cost of electricity. The utility has to pass on the cost of the utility wire. Its all relative. Here's an good expirement for TruePatriot. Stick your finger in a light socket. Now that will be trickle(economics) you can believe in.

The benefits I listed were not part of normal life before the unions. Now they are because the unions fought for them and now it is commonplace in just about all business's. Just like you are probably getting paid more then you would even if you are not in a union job because the owners fear the thought of their people unionizing or quitting going to a better union job. Someday you may see the big picture. An example are the Toyota factories down south. They pay practically almost as much as Detroits union car companies in order to keep them from unionizing. As a result, all jobs, union or non-union, enjoy better pay because of unions or the union threat. Even middle management benefits because their pay is related to how much pay their workers get. You are mistaken to think that one day business got together to decide what would make their workers lives better so graciously they started handing out benefits out of the goodness of their hearts. Get real.

you had too much left wing kool-aid Truepatroit! And you say (take paid vacations, sickdays, paid holidays, and go to the doctor. These are just some of the examples how unions have improved your life.) Dude I have these same things at my old job! and they don't have a union! So you can say I hate American workers all you want! But this american worker say the Gov't already is hurting the american people why unemployment is rising?/ it doesn't matter who is in control of the Gov't Dems or Reps it's the idiots who is running the country!

TruePatriot

Riutta, I still think you hate the American worker. After all, unions are nothing more then a group of American workers negotiating for their labor just like any other business transaction. By the way, unions have fought for many benefits in which you enjoy today. You should thank them every week when you don't have to work a 7 day workweek, take paid vacations, sickdays, paid holidays, and go to the doctor. These are just some of the examples how unions have improved your life. I guess you are one who would not think twice about crossing a strike line. You deserve to work in the conditions American workers had to work in a hundred or so years ago before the union movement. You would be singing a different song today.

google! Like it or not public schools is a failure! If you want public schools to succeed! 1) No indoctrination By Gov't, Special Interest groups 2)keep politics out! 3) keep the children of illegals out. in CA kids from mexico walks across the boarder going to our schools they are not citizen of this country sucking up our tax $$ 4)city or state should offer big tax break to Co that sells supplies & equipment in order to get big tax break the Co. needs to sell their product at fraction of the cost! it will save tax payers $$ so the schools won't need more tax $$ 5) get rid of the unions! Pay teachers better wages based on their performance & get rid of the ones who's not doing their job! Those are some of the examples!

Hate The American Workers? Dude! Lay off what you been Drinking! I posted the real truth about the unions sometime back! The unions are just another scam using american workers! Why do they spend their dues on special interest groups? political group? ect.. behind the american workers back? Why the unions is recruiting Illegals? hurting american workers! it's all about the dues the $$ money they can pocket! & some of the union workers is sucking up to the big boss! and the company can't fire the lazy worker protected by the union! The union is like the Gov't giving things away & the workers who takes it becomes a lazy bums just like welfare bums! it hurts the other worker who takes pride on their job! And why the Union becomes a thug for the democrat at a town hall meetings? the union is becoming like a prostitute they want more $$ from their sugar daddy! So TruePatriot I know you can't handle the real facts about the union & you probably don't want to research it by using

Raegan deserves the credit for the middle class shrinking when he took office because he and his cronies started attacking labor and devalued hard work in favor of speculation. This mess we are currently in is a direct result of Raeganomics by old Ronnie and his followers even including Bill Clinton. Raeganomics and trickle down theory are proven bogus.

If you take the total deficit our country accumulated over the last 40 years most of it was caused by Raegan and your buddy "W".

How did Regan shrink the middle class? Cutting tax rates did that? TruePatriot, you love class warfare don't you?

You don't mention that inflation, which is greatly caused by spending money we don't have, really hurts the poor. So, while both parties are at fault, the democrats have spent money we don't have faster than republicans, which leads to greater inflation.

TruePatriot

You will see the quality of life for average American workers and the shrinking of the middle class started once Raegan got into office. Now we have a shrinking middle class, a declining union membership, and a declining standard of living. The gap between the rich and the rest of us is the largest it has ever been. Unions made this country an economic superpower with the strongest middle class. The rest of the world envied our middle class. This also allowed us to afford to be a military superpower. Since Raegan got into office and started attacking American workers, we are slowly becoming like a third world country with a few super rich folks and the rest of us working poor; practically slaves. The "Leave it to Beaver" days are over when average American families could afford the American dream and go on vacations and send their kids to college on one income. Riutta, why do you hate the American workers?

Police, Fire Dept. schools but not until public schools has been cleaned up, If the City wants money for these things! they need the books & receipts to be open to the public so we the voters can see what the city been spending on if we the voters find what the city been spending on some wasteful crap Like pet project and special interest groups ect. Then we say NO! we could give them a option take a pay cut for what you did then we could vote yes! if no wait until next election to vote your sorry a** out of here! Simple as that!

Riutta1966
11-02-09 11:18 PM
Now The Dems want to tax everything & wants new taxes! Even they if they got what they want It will still fail! Gov't can't even balance a budget,Gov't run Public school failed! why they need money all the time? The Union Caused it Yes Truepatriot you still can't handle the real facts about the union!Special Interest groups, schools being indoctrinated by the Left & special Interest groups, Children of the Illegals drainig our $$, So why Charter & private schools does better than public? they don't have unions & it's not indoctrinated! Since Abides cries like a baby you anti tax people! Well we can't afford to pay taxes what the Gov't got us in this mess people losing jobs left & right Hey I'm for it if they need $$ for

How did we become an ecomomic superpower? Better question, what is killing our economic success? Less emphasis on education/apprenticeship and more emphasis of sticking it to the man that has a bigger wallet. Cities/States/D.C. spending more money than they can ever tax. China owning us financially. Unions thugging major corporations for contracts that are not viable long-term. Eventually someone has to pay the bill. Getting out of this mess will not be overnight.

No we don't deserve better than this mess. We got just what we voted for. An intelligent media would illustrate this. We have nation of too many folks that are leaning on someone else. A vote for a socialist should be called trickle up misery.

Now where can I get some of that Obama stash!

It's easy to see that you are someone who loves class warfare, believes the government should have control over a persons earnings, and thinks robbing Peter to pay Paul is O.K.

The tax rates, were as they should be, prior to 1916.....0% for everybody. Rich, poor, middle class. No income tax on personal income. That's how it should be. Then government got greedy, to the point where people risk jail to avoid taxes because they are such a burden on people.
