HANCOCK - Davin Isaacson, owner of Discover Chiropractic in Hancock, likes the freedom of running his own business.

"It's the chance to be my own boss, do things my own way," he said. "Just not having to answer to someone else, make your own schedule. It's nice to be able to hire your own employees."

Isaacson studied pre-med at Michigan Technological University before getting a degree from the Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minn. Chiropractic care is a form of health care placing emphasis on spinal alignment and its impact on the functioning of the nervous system.

The inspiration for the career came from Isaacson's own successful experience with it. That includes treatment for sports injuries in junior high, as well as scoliosis.

His patients come in with a broad variety of conditions, ranging from acute injuries such as sciatica to chronic arthritis and scar tissue from old injuries.

Some patients have reported drastic improvements in organ system issues, as well as relief of other injuries, or ailments such as irritable bowel syndrome.

"Not to say we cure any of that, but there's a component that can be cured with chiropractic," he said.

Most patients are in their mid-teens through mid-40s, though they've ranged from infants to 94-year-olds.

The initial office consultation runs from $35 to $45, while treatments are from $37 to $47, depending on the severity of the case. While some people address acute cases, others come in on a regular maintenance schedule.

Isaacson goes in for chiropractic care himself once a month.

"Just the repetition of a physical job, I find if I get treated once a month myself, I'm much less apt to have tension or have any kind of pain," he said.
