Veterans deserving of remembrance
To the editor: Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2009 was a memorable day. Our morning was spent at the Chassell School where veterans from VFW 6507 were honored by the children with testimonials, singing and homemade cards. The afternoon found us at PortagePointe where vets distributed cards and flags to residents who either served in the military or was a spouse of a veteran. Allegiance to our flag, prayer service by Rev. Elmer Liimatta, VFW chaplain, and singing followed. Afterward, a coffee social was enjoyed by everyone. Later, vets and spouses were treated to a delicious dinner at Applebee’s Restaurant in Houghton, where the staff provided quick and efficient service to all. Vets were able to eat “free” and seniors were given a 10 percent discount card to be used that day and in the future. All in all, a truly wonderful and memorable day. Thank you to everyone for honoring our well-deserving veterans.
