Author Book Talk, CLK Library, Calumet
November 12, 2009

The U.P. and northern Wisconsin and Minnesota are home to more than just beautiful lakes, cascading waterfalls and tall trees. They’re also the setting for some spine-tingling mystery novels. Nancy Barr, author of the Page One mystery series, will examine how authors like herself, Steve Hamilton, Nevada Barr, William Kent Krueger and others utilize the North Woods as settings for their work. Barr will address such questions as how and why a fiction author chooses a particular setting, what are the challenges of making a crime story “work” in a rural, isolated setting and how the setting is utilized to move the story along. Barr will also discuss the research and writing process behind her newest Arbutus Press release, Page One: Whiteout and will sign copies of the book which will be available for sale. Now an employee of Michigan Technological University, Barr worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for 10 years, drawing upon that experience for her books, which are all set in the U.P. For more information, visit her pages in the authors section at www.mysterywriters.org.
