The Downtown Bite

Clelia II coming in, live music tonight

Thu, July 2, 2009 @ 9:28AM The newsroom is buzzing this morning with official word that the Clelia II is getting close to the Copper Country. News editor Mark Wilcox is heading out to the bridge to take some photos of it, and hopefully I'll be able to post them here on the Downtown Bite immediately afterwards. Rumor has it the boat is HUGE. Also, the third edition of the downtown concert series is tonight, and it will be the first one located on the new road as they are setting it up in front of Surplus Outlet (this week's sponsor). Get out there and watch them if you can. Check today's paper for a cool sports article by Gazette free lancer Paul Peterson about old-time hockey hero "Cyclone" Taylor. Why is this in the downtown bite? Well because if you like this article you -need- to get down to the Dee and check out the museum, it's quite the sh.

History 101

Tue, March 3, 2009 @ 10:54AM I'm a lot of things at heart. I love my small family, music, singing and most things-to-do with my home state of Nebraska. I thoroughly enjoy sports, maps, flags and pennants, discussions of church issues, and re-runs of "Gilligan's Island" and "Leave It to Beaver." My two favorite times of year are summer and Christmas. But one of my most favorite things is history. It's one of the reasons I'm in the newspaper business. It's been said newspapers write the first draft of history. Historians often look back to newspaper accounts to help their journey. The Daily Mining Gazette has been writing the first draft of history for 150 years -- weekly for the first 50 years as the Portage Lake Mining Gazette, and as the Daily Mining Gazette for the last 100 years. In celebration of our 150th anniversary in 2009, we've been republishing a front page from the past each Tuesday.

Stretch Drive Math

Tue, February 17, 2009 @ 1:34PM It’s hard to believe that the stretch drive of the winter sports regular season is upon us. Some conferences are already in the bag (like Houghton’s girls in the WestPAC) and others are darned close to it (Ontonagon girls and Baraga boys in the Copper Country). Others are much more in flux. Locally, the most obvious of these is the WestPAC boys’ basketball race. Houghton owns a 1 1/2 game cushion with just two to play, but those two are Ironwood tonight and a tough road trip to Calumet. A Houghton win, though far from certain, would clinch a share of the WestPAC title and eliminate Ironwood and West Iron from contention for the top spot. If the Red Devils win tonight, all heck breaks loose. Houghton would still lead the conference, but the field would have games in hand. The best part is that there’s a entirely likely scenario by which we could still have a four-way tie: 1. Houghton loses to Ironwood and Calumet. 2.
