favela - FAH-veh-la (or fah-VEY-la) - Brazilian slums, usually crammed high on hills above a city - often used for any Portugese or Spanish slums
Example: "An article on international cities in Smithsonian magazine makes the comment: 'Cities are particular. You would never mistake a favela in Rio de Janeiro for downtown Los Angeles.'"
