Rotary Reporting (women): Tech 70, Lake State 58

January 29, 2013 - Michael Bleach
HOUGHTON — Sam Hoyt has entered The Zone.

It is a plane precious few athletes ever reach. It is the point where her coach Kim Cameron just wants to hand her the ball and enjoy the game as her senior point guard directs the team.

Hoyt submitted her third straight-20 points game Saturday — a streak broken by a 19-point game — with a 27-point performance on 10-of-18 shooting, including five threes.

Not so coincidentally, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team won their fourth straight with a 70-58 decision at Lake Superior State.

“She was awesome, just amazing,” Cameron said in a phone interview. “In the second half, she hit 8-of-10 shots, and one of the misses was an end-of-the-shot-clock heave. She is at the point right now where I think she is absolutely not going to lose a game if she has anything to do with it.”

The rest of the Huskies followed Hoyt’s blazing lead, with the guards combining to shoot 11-of-16 from three.

Sophomore Jillian Ritchie posted her second-straight game with double-digit points, knocking down all three trey she attempted for 11 total points, along with a game-leading seven rebounds.

“She really stepped up this weekend in the sense of her offensive play,” Cameron said. “I think she understands that we need her to hit some open shots and she was very, very efficient this weekend. I think she has some confidence right now and it is helping our offense that people have to guard her from the perimeter.”

When Tech did miss a shot, they did a nice job crashing the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive rebounds with Kylie Moxley leading the way with three.

“I think (the Lakers) didn’t have an up tempo mindset, so we had an opportunity where we could still go to the boards and we would be able to get back on defense,” Cameron said. “We created a lot of second-chance opportunities that way.”
