Off the northeastern coast of Isle Royale National Park, a diving accident occurred Thursday afternoon, claiming the life of John Nousaine, 70, of Superior, Wisconsin.

The accident took place at 1:44 p.m. while Nousaine was exploring the wreck of the Emperor on the stern section of the sunken vessel which ranges from 100 to 150 feet deep.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff, Medical Examiner and National Park Service responded to the incident, and an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
